Chat

Chat is Masked City's live message board — real-time, no page refresh needed. It's a dedicated page with three channels, simple text formatting, and a short list of ground rules to keep it usable. There's no command system right now (no /whisper, /roll, or anything like it) — chat is intentionally simple for now, and more features may get added later depending on how much it actually gets used.

Requirements

You need to be Level 2 to use chat at all. Below that, the page won't let you in.

Channels

  • Main — open to everyone Level 2+, Hero and Villain alike.
  • Alliance — private to your own Alliance. Only shows up if you're actually in one.
  • Staff — staff only.

Your client stays connected to every channel you have access to at once — switching tabs is instant, no reconnect needed.

Sending Messages

Messages are capped at 280 characters. There's no cost and no cooldown — it's meant to feel like a real conversation, not something you're rationing.

Formatting

Chat is plain text plus emoticon shortcodes — it does not support the full BBCode used in Forums and Mail (no [b], [url], [player=], etc. — typing those just shows up as literal text). Donators get one extra option: Settings lets you turn on bold, italic, underline, and a custom text color for everything you send in chat.

Who's Active

Each channel shows who's currently active — based on who's actually posted in the last 5 minutes, not just who's connected. Sit quietly and you'll drop off the active list even with the page open; say something and you're back on it.

History

Chat keeps roughly the last hour of messages per channel, up to 50 shown when you load the page. Older messages get cleared out automatically — chat is meant for what's happening right now, not a permanent record. If you want something preserved, the Forums are the place for it.

Names in Chat

Names are styled the same way they are everywhere else on the site — staff ranks get their own prefix and color, Alignment War Generals and Captains show their title, and Donators get their ⭐ prefix.

Rules & Moderation

  • Follow the site's Game Rules — chat isn't a separate set of rules, just a faster-moving place they still apply.
  • Staff can issue a chat ban, separate from a game ban — a chat-banned player is blocked from the chat page and can't send messages, but can otherwise keep playing normally.
  • There's currently no individual message deletion — a ban is the tool staff have for handling a problem in chat, not removing a single message after the fact. Keep that in mind before you hit send.

What's Not Here (Yet)

No slash commands, no whispers/private messages inside chat itself (use Mail for that), no @mentions, and no message editing. Chat is deliberately minimal right now — if it gets real use, more will get built on top of it.
